Confused by all the new school terms? Here is a glossary to help you out!
Art Docents These volunteers teach a monthly art history lesson to each classroom. They also do hands-on art lessons during the year.
Big Buddies/Little Buddies This program partners upper grade classes (Big Buddies) with lower grade classes (Little Buddies) for a variety of social and learning experiences.
Book Fair This fundraising event is held in the school library each fall & spring, will feature a wonderful selection of books for all ages. Books will be on display and available for purchase.
Bulldog Raffle Raffle tickets given to students for responsible behavior without being asked and for participating in Spirit Days. Raffle tickets are then put into a drawing for a pizza party or various prizes.
Bulldog Beat This is a valuable newsletter published by our principal and emailed each Wednesday. This will keep you informed of all upcoming events and school information.
Bulldog Players Fourth and fifth grade students have the opportunity to participate in a truly enjoyable musical production. Tryouts are in November and the play is held in early February.
Buzz Book The Van Meter student directory contains a wealth of information about Van Meter. It lists students’ address, phone numbers, and e-mail address (by parent’s permission); the roster for each class; along with office and staff contact information. This is a “must have” for all parents and students. A special advertising section is included, the proceeds of which benefit LGEF.
Bulldog Stampede A beloved tradition, the Van Meter Walk, Jog, Run has the whole school out on the field with parents volunteers and cheering all the students on. Held each spring.
CASA Community Against Substance Abuse – a non-profit organization encouraging healthy lifestyles choices and prevention of drug and alcohol abuse through education, parent networking, peer counseling, etc. They are the sponsors of “Red Ribbon Week” and various other events.
Clubhouse Childcare is provided before and after school for Van Meter students from 7:30am until 6:15pm in the portables behind the kindergarten rooms off Nino. Contact Clubhouse or the Los Gatos/Saratoga Recreation Department, which sponsors this program for more information or to register.
Dad’s Club Van Meter Dads get together to help with various projects around school. They also provide the barbeque for the Bulldog Stampede and for Fun and Field Day!
e-Scrip Register your credit cards, ATM/debit cards and Safeway Club Card. Participating merchants donate a percentage of your purchases to the H&SC. Look for more information in your child’s Wednesday envelope or go to www.escrip.com.
Family Picnic & Movie Night A school wide dinner picnic held in September. This is a wonderful community building event that brings Van Meter families together. Bring a blanket, your picnic dinner or purchase from the many food trucks and join Van Meter families on the school lawn for fun and movie under the stars.
Fun and Field Day This is a school-wide event held near the end of the school year where the students participate in fun physical games. This is an event coordinated by the Van Meter Faculty with parent volunteers. Teams are comprised of older and younger students working together.
H&SC Home & School Club This is where the staff, a parent board, and parents of Van Meter School meet to discuss and make decisions for our school. Meetings are held once a month on the third Wednesday of the month. The meetings alternate between mornings at 8:15am and evenings at 7:00pm. Free babysitting is provided at the evening meetings. All parents are encouraged to attend.
LGEF Los Gatos Education Foundation was started by a group of parents in 1985. The Foundation works at the District level to fund programs such as art, science and literacy.
Parents on Campus A Volunteer group of parents provides student supervision on campus during the lunch hour. 3-4 volunteers are needed each day. Training is provided and will aid parents to become comfortable in handling any potential safety issues.

Restaurant Wednesday One Wednesday per month, Van Meter will partner with a local restaurant. The restaurant will donate a percentage of sales from lunch and dinner to Van Meter Home & School Club.
Room Parents Volunteer parents are the main contacts for each class, teacher and Home and School club. Room parents work directly with teachers in the classroom to help with activities such as class parties, field trips, library, and computer/media lab.
School Supplies H&SC has partnered with the teachers to purchase and supply all needed student supplies, streamlining the process, providing saving by ordering in bulk, and time standing in line. This is value provided by of your H&SC and included in your asked Annual Donation.
Science Fair An event where students get an opportunity to show off their own science skills. Everyone wins at this one! This event is held in the early spring.
Spirit Days Van Meter spirit colors are red and white. Every child, parent and staff member is encouraged to wear these colors, or a Van Meter t-shirt/sweatshirt, every Friday. Periodically, Student Council holds a themed spirit day, such as “Stuffed Animal Day”, “Crazy Hair Day”, “Sports Day”.
Spirit Wear Van Meter’s collectable T-Shirts and Sweatshirt’s for Kids, Mom’s and Dad’s are for sale.
Wednesday Envelope This white envelope is sent home every week, on Wednesday. This is a major source for communication during the school year between the school and your home. It should be signed and returned to school promptly. See also, E-Packet
Yearbook The Van Meter School yearbook. This album is full of fun photos and is produced each year by parent volunteers. You purchase the yearbook directly with vendor.
